More recent roster moves:

— Will sign Saints FB Terrelle Smith. Excellent choice!

— Will sign Cowboys DE Ebenezer Ekuban, an underperforming former first-round pick. Probably ensures that UFA Tyrone Rogers (a Brown since 1999) won’t return.

— Cornerback Lewis Sanders signed with Jacksonville as an unrestricted free agent. A fourth-round pick in 2000, Sanders was most productive on special teams, but a series of injuries seemed to frustrate Coach Butch Davis.

— Offensive lineman Shaun O’Hara signed with the Giants after the Browns made little effort to keep him. A versatile and smart overachiever, he started 38 games in four years at guard and center. A few free agent guards have been through Berea. Regardless of whether we sign one, I’m hoping against hope (as is Ross Verba) that class clown Barry Stokes returns as a versatile, experienced backup.

Chris Gardocki, one of the few remaining original new Browns, left via free agency for Pittsburgh. Reliable as both a punter and holder, Gardocki would have cost a bit in salary cap space. Most likely, the team will field an inexperienced punter like Derrick Frost, the Northern Iowa legend waived by two other teams in 2003 before the Browns put him on the active roster.

— Others signed since the season ended:

* WR Richard Alston, who was in camp in 2003;

* former Stanford QB Todd Husak, who won NFL Europe’s World Bowl last year;

* RB Joffrey Reynolds, who had a cup of coffee with the Rams last year;

* undersized WR Hugh Smith, undrafted and waived by the Ravens in the 2003 pre-season.
