Sorry to play the part of language cop, but I just can’t believe that the Warren Tribune Chronicle would run this headline: “Support for Davis quickly vanquishing.”
As anyone who ever studied for the SAT should know, “vanquishing” is a verb form synonymous with “conquering,” and it requires a direct object. Who’s being vanquished by Davis’ support? Maybe it’s the patience of Browns fans.
Wait, though, it gets worse. Writer Mike McLain leads with an allusion to the firebutchdavis.com site, which got some traffic after KJ was cut. “It’s safe to say that the Web site added a few more numbers to its list …”
No it’s not. The site has been down for over a week. It seems to have “vanquished” into thin air, but he must not have bothered to check. That makes me doubt, among other things, the credibility of his unsourced claim that the site got 40,000 hits.
