OH DEAR GOD — The AP is reporting that William Green “had cut himself” in the side bad enough to be hospitalized. It’s too early to tell how serious this injury is, or indeed whether the wound was intentionally inflicted. Obviously, the circumstances lead me to suspect a suicide attempt. As you surely know, Green is serving a four-game suspension after being arrested and charged with DUI and pot possession last month.
It’s clear by now that Green’s problems go way, way beyond football. I’m writing him off for the rest of the season in hopes he will do whatever it takes to heal his body and spirit.
UPDATE: Fortunately it now looks like the injury is minor. It may have been the result of a fight this morning with his girlfriend (and mother of his two children). Green was apparently the “victim of a domestic violence crime,” according to Coach Butch Davis. I’ve read under-sourced chatter that Green went out last night, but drawing any connection would be speculation at this point.
Browns owner Randy Lerner did visit Green in the hospital, which is laudable, though it may very well run afoul of league rules regarding contact with a suspended player.
