Random ramblings:

— William Green now ranks sixth in the league in rushing yards. He’s on pace for a 1,317-yard season. His average and TD stats are rather low, but with the energetic effort he shows on every play, no doubt he’ll bust a few long runs before the year is done.

— Dennis Northcutt continues to be the most exciting receiver of the bunch. He’s also a key factor on third downs, when the Browns convert 44.9% of the time, seventh best in the league. Too bad it’s probably his last year as a Brown. C.J. Jones hasn’t gotten into a game yet, but the team is trying its best to hang onto him for next year, when he’ll be a strong candidate to return punts and join in multiple-receiver sets.

— The Browns’ stealth tight end strategy is interesting. They signed Zeron Flemister last week when Aaron Shea went on IR, but under the radar, they released him before the game to promote Chad Mustard from the practice squad to the game-day roster. The massive Mustard helped out as the third tight end on running downs. Perhaps they plan to re-sign Flemister to the practice squad and then activate him once he learns enough of the system to help on offense. Or perhaps I should give up trying to intuit the Browns’ intentions when it comes to the tight end/H-back/fullback nexis.

— Even more interesting will be the forthcoming decisions on RB Lee Suggs and WR Frisman Jackson, both of whom were injured but are now eligible to begin practicing. I love Jamel White for his exciting on-field skills and devoted work ethic, but if Suggs even starts to show his potential this year, I’m sure White will be a goner after the season.

— The Browns are listed as six-point favorites for next Sunday’s game against the winless Chargers. Can you remember the last time they were picked to win by that much? I can’t. It’s enough to make me really nervous.
