QB SNEAK PEEK — At today’s scrimmage in Cleveland Browns Stadium, a crowd of 37,810 saw the team’s first action against live competition. Judging from the chants of “Kelly, Kelly,” Holcomb had the fans on his side. The stats also give #10 the edge, though he played more against Buffalo’s second team defense:
Holcomb: 12-16, 164 yards, 2 TDs
Couch: 8-13, 79 yards, 1 TD
But don’t think that means Holcomb is anywhere near being named the starter. Quite the contrary, actually. Carmen Policy hinted during the radio broadcast that Butch Davis has an inclination as to who will start, but the announcement is being deferred into the preseason, presumably to make the most out of the competition. As radio voice Casey Coleman opined, “I’m not so sure the quarterback decision hasn’t already been made… It works much better with Kelly relieving Tim than Tim relieving Kelly.” So that’s how it will come to pass. The only questions are when Holcomb will first step onto the field and whether it’s due to injury or ineffectiveness. My early guess: Week 2, at Baltimore.
